Upcoming Changes to Microsoft Remote Desktop Client

End of life announcements

  1. Microsoft Remote Desktop Client – MSI Installer

    First off, what this isnt:

Remote Desktop Connection (aka mstsc.exe) is staying to those connections to remote desktops aka RDP.

Now what does this announcement mean?

On 27 March 2026, the MSI based installer for Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Windows reaches end of support. This means that it will no longer be available to download, and no longer receive updates after this date.

This end of support means that it will also no longer get the SlimCore teams optimisations updates either, which means the user experience on Teams will start to get worse as the client gets out of date.
  2. Microsoft Remote Desktop Client – MS Store App

Hot on the heels of the previous announcement about end of support for the Remote Desktop app downloaded from the MS store, which goes end of support in May of 2025.
  3. windows365.microsoft.com

Microsoft announced, as part of MC1013451 that support for the Windows 365 Web Portal (https://windows365.microsoft.com) will be no longer accessible to use on 1 June 2025.

This means that the Windows App becomes the place users can restart, troubleshoot and review their devices

With all these announcement, the recommendation is to migrate over to the Windows App as a replacement which can be installed from MS Store or download the MSIX from the Microsoft Website.

The Windows App is a greatly improved change for the user interface, its more friendly, more inituitive and much better in my opinion, and has been my go-to Virtual desktop client for a while now.

We have started to move all of our Virtual Desktop users over to the Windows App as our default client.

The Future

Could the Windows App be the one-stop client for all connections to “windows” based devices? Could be as the announcement also states:

Remote desktop users: Users connecting to remote desktops from the Remote Desktop app should use Remote Desktop Connection until support for this connection type is available in Windows App.
