Its been good Skype…

… Enjoy retirement

Microsoft announced today that on 5 May 2025 Skype will be retired.

Customers are recommended to move over to Microsoft Teams as the recommended replacement to Skype.

Skype’s meteoric rise in the digital communication world is a tale worth telling. Born out of a simple idea to bridge distances and connect people more effortlessly, Skype debuted in 2003 and soon revolutionized the way we communicate. Before Skype, video calls were a luxury, often plagued by expensive and unreliable services. Skype brought video calling to the masses, offering free and high-quality voice and video calls over the internet.

Microsoft bought Skype and used it to transition the enterprise away from Microsoft Lync (remember that!) and eventually Microsoft Teams was introduced and enticed the enterprise over.

I remember getting skype with some calling credits, and initially using it as a replacement for MSN Messenger and AOL Chat (AIM). Gradually as mobiles got introduced and they got smarter with SMS messages I, along with others, moved other.

These days its WhatsApp!, social media etc that get most of the consumer “chat” these days and skype is left in a box.

Thanks Skype for all your hard work and foundation laying work. Take it easy in retirement.

[ Well now, if this doesnt point towards how old I am, I don’t know what else would! ]
